How many times have we backed out of a situation in life because we have been intimidated? Whether it is in the work place, or your social life, we have all been there before. Let The Center for Physical Health be with you on your journey to achieving your personal goals that may be clouded by a sense of intimidation! Since this month’s theme is weight loss (check out the month of May’s articles if you haven’t already!) let’s start there! In the first article this month, we discussed the many benefits of aerobic training. If you can honestly say that participating in a race (5k, 10k, marathon, triathlon, etc.) isn’t on your bucket list, you are permitted to stop reading now. But if it is, and you are somewhat skeptical or optimistic, let us help you get started!
Long, lean legs, expensive watches, bright, fancy shoes; this is a typical scene to the starting line of a 5k. Anyone has the right to be intimidated by that! But what many don’t realize is that the heart and soul of these races are made up by those who are out there to prove something to themselves. To most of us, it’s not about the finishing time, the pace per mile, or the attire. It’s about accomplishing a personal goal, and doing so in a fun atmosphere with the support of a local community. In almost every case, races such as your local 5k will have finishers who can run 5:00 minutes/mile to those who walk 20:00 minutes/mile.
There are many opportunities for you to become involved here in our community. Vertical Runner of McDonald maintains a list at http://www.verticalrunnerofmcdonald.com/ as does the Youngstown Raod Runners Club at http://ytownrunners.org/races.html
Another asset to our area is the amazing Mill Creek Park. If you haven’t been to this 2,600 acre Metropark, don’t be afraid to go explore! Mill Creek Park expands from the west side of Youngstown to Boardman Township. Aside from the 20 miles of road within the park, there is an additional 15 miles of foot trails. More features include bridges, ponds, streams, gardens, golf courses, and waterfalls. Activities that can be done in the park include: hiking, biking, boating, fishing, golf, tennis, volleyball, picnicking, cross-country skiing, sledding, and much more!! A map of Mill Creek Park can be found here.
Whether you want to achieve a personal goal, become more active in what this community can offer to your fitness, or simply take a walk in Mill Creek Park; let The Center for Physical Health be a part of your journey! Our staff and trainers are here to make your commitment to being more active as enjoyable as possible! Don’t let intimidation stand in your way of fulfilling your dreams!
